Intranets’ potential underestimated, claims survey
By Graeme Burton
A new survey examining intranet use worldwide suggests that they are not yet delivering all of their promised productivity benefits – a factor partly due to corporate management underestimating the potential they provide. That is one of the conclusions of the study, published by analyst group NetStrategy/JMC.
“Senior management perception of the intranet is out of sync’ with reality on the ground. They are largely unaware of the usefulness of the intranet for employees… 55 per cent of respondents say that if the intranet were unavailable for one or two hours, employees would be disturbed in their work, yet only 13 per cent of the respondents say that senior management perceives the intranet to be ‘business critical’,” according to the report.
As a result, respondents suggested that intranets are generally underfunded. Although budgets for intranets are expected to be increased in 2007 that will come at the price of greater centralisation.
