Gartner identifies five most over-hyped security risks

Industry analysts have provided a reality check to companies unwilling to invest in certain IT solutions because of the security risks associated with their implementation.

Analysts at Gartner’s recent IT Security Summit highlighted several common threats that they say have been greatly exaggerated. The five most over-hyped security threats were:

  • Internet protocoltelephony is unsafe;
  • Mobile malware will cause widespread damage;
  • “Warhol Worms” will make the internet unreliable for business traffic and virtual private networks;
  • Regulatory compliance equals security;
  • Wireless hot spots are unsafe.

Gartner analysts examined the status of each issue and offered feedback concerning the realistic risks that companies face.
